Vadodara, formally called Baroda, is known as the land of Banyan tree. 'Vad' means a banyan tree. Sayaji Rao Gaekwad III (1875-1939) was an able ruler of this place who persevered to make Vadodara an educational, industrial and commercial center.

Vadodara District covers an area of 7,794 sq km with Vadodara as the headquarters. Chhota Udaipur, Dabhoi, Koyali, Sankheda, Bajwa, Chandod are important places. The Mahi, Narmada, Vishwamitri, Dhadhar,and Dev are the main rivers. Vadodara is a major center of the pharmaceutical and glass industry in India. A heavy water plant, a large oil-refinery and a fertilizer factory are also located here.

Dabhoi Fort is one of the fine examples of Hindu military architecture. Chandod is a pilgrim center, and Sankheda is known for its lacquer-work and wood-based handicrafts. Other attractions are Laxmi Vilas palace, Maharaja Fateh Singh Rao museum, Kirti Mandir, Sayajibaug Zoo and Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery.
