Raisen, the administrative headquarters of Raisen District
, is a historic town situated at the foot of the Vindhyas, in Madhya Pradesh
. It was the erstwhile capital of the early Hindu rulers of the area and the

Major points of tourist interest in the town are an ancient sandstone fort and several old palaces and mosques. It is believed that the name of the town is a corruption of Rajavasini or Rajasayan, meaning the royal residence. The historic sites of Sanchi,
Bhojpur and Bhimbethika constitute interesting excursions outside the town.
