Khargone District




Khargone District, formerly known as West Nimar, is located in the south-west boundary of Madhya Pradesh. It is a tribal area surrounded by the Vindhya and Satpura ranges. The Narmada, Kunda and Veda are the main rivers. Khargone receives an average rainfall of 831 mm. It has an area of 8,010 sq km and a population of 1.5 million.

Khargone is bordered by the districts of Dhar, Indore and Dewas in the north, Khandwa, Burhanpur in the east, Barwani in the west and the state of Maharashtra in the south. The popular temples here are Navgrah Mandir and Shantinath Mandir.

Khargone is well connected to Indore, Khandwa, Jhabua, Jalgaon and Dhule by road. The Khandwa-Indore meter gauge line of the Western Railways passes through the eastern parts of Khargone. There are major railway stations at Barwaha and Sanawad. Nearest airport is at Indore.

The places to visit are Maheshwar, famous for its Maheshwar sarees and temples, Mandleshwar; Oon, renowned for ancient Parmar Hindu temples and Jain temples; Bakawa famous for its 'shivlingas' made of stones from the Narmada river; and Raverkhedi, where the tomb of the great Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao is situated.
