Narmada River Valley or the Narmada Basin spans across the states of
Madhya Pradesh,
Maharashtra and
Gujarat and is formed by the
Narmada River - the fifth largest and the longest west-flowing river in India. The valley lies between east longitudes 72° 32' and 81° 45' and north latitudes 21° 20' and 23° 45'.
Narmada River Valley has an elongated shape (like a thin ribbon) and measures 953 km from east to west and has a maximum width of 234 km from north to south. The Vindhya hills (north), Satpura ranges(south), Maikala ranges(east) and the Arabian Sea(west) form its boundaries.
Of its total length, 87% of the valley falls in Madhya Pradesh alone. The rest 2% of its length is in Maharashtra and the remaining 11% in Gujarat.
