The city derives its name from 'Mahotsava' – the great celebration performed by its founder Chandravarman, in the 9th century. Mahoba is dotted with various Buddhist and Jain temples built in the same style as the Khajuraho temples by the Chandela kings, who ruled over
Bundelkhand between the 9th and the 11th centuries. Major tourist attractions include Kakramath Temple, Vijay Sagar Pakshi Vihar, Madan Sagar and the
Sun Temple at Rahila Sagar.
