Iltumish

After Qutabuddin his son Aram Shah succeeded to the throne. He was not able to rule the country as his forerunners. The nobles elected Iltumish to take charge of the situation. This led to a battle, in which Aram shah was defeated and killed. Iltumish ascended the throne in 1211. He was the sultan of Delhi and also known in history as Shamsuddin. He recaptured all the lost territories of Qutabuddin, and also added Malwa and Sind to his realm. He fought against the rival slave chiefs Yildiz and Qabacha.

Mongols lead by Chengiz Khan was one of the major threats faced by Iltumish. He averted a conflict with the Mongols by his wise maneuvers. He captured both Multan and Sindh by defeating chieftain Qabacha, the rival slave of Jaladuddin. By defeating Jaladuddin, he conquered his territories of Bengal and Bihar. He attacked Anthambor and Mansor in 1226 and occupied Ajmer, Jalor, and Nagor. He was a man of good architectural skills and a patron of art and learning. Iltumish was succeeded by his son Ruknuddin Feroze.
