Gwalior

Formerly a princely state of Madhya Pradesh, Gwalior stands to the north-eastern side of the fort hill. The history of this ancient city can be dated back to the 8th century when it was named after Gwalipa, a legendary saint of the 8th century. It is also said that the city was founded 2000 years ago by King Surajsen. Gwalior is described as the city of palaces, temples, monuments and the great musical tradition of Dhrupad. Above all, the city is famous for the magnificent fort that stands on the hills of Gwalior, which dominates it completely. Gwalior was also the home of Tansen, the great singer in the court of Akbar.

Some of the attractions of the city include Teli Ka Mandir, Man Singh Palace, Archeological Museum and Jai Vilas Palace. In addition to these heritages and museums it also holds the Jama Masjid built in the 17th century, the tomb of Mohammed Gaus, the tomb of Tansen and Moti Mahal.

Gwalior is 423 km away from the capital city Bhopal and the nearest airport, Gwalior Airport is situated 9 km north-east of the city. The National Highways 3 and 75 connect it with the nearby districts and towns.
