Devgarh Fort

Devgarh is a historical fort situated about 38 km south of Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh. It is built on a hill which is fortified by a deep valley clothed with dense reserve forest. Devgarh was the erstwhile capital of Gondvana dynasty until 18th century.

Devgarh Fort, built by King Jatav of Gonds, was regarded as the largest tribal kingdom in Central India. The architecture of the fort is similar to Mughal. The archeological structures similar to palace, fort and other buildings make it a favorite tourist destination and speak about the past glory. It is believed that there was a secret underground passage connecting Devgarh to Nagpur.

The fort is now in a dilapidated state due to age and neglect; the remnants include the main gate facing north, Nagarkhana - a place of cattle drum, and ruins of Darbar Hall. The reservoir named 'Mortitanka' is worth visiting.

Devgarh Fort is approachable up to its foot by motor road.
