Chinkara Gazelle Deer

Chinkara Gazelle (Gazella gazella) is seen in the sand hills of the desert zone, semi-desert and scrub in mountains, coastal foothills and in the salt range. They are in a constant state of animation, black tail wagging, ears twitching, heads frisking one way and the other.

A full-grown male stands about 65 cm at the shoulder and weighs about 23 kg. They feed on grass, various leaves, crops and fruits including pumpkins and melons. They never go too far from water.

They breed in any season but there are two birth peaks, the major one in April and a minor one in autumn. The males are territorial and demarcate it by fecal stations. Their gestation period is five to six months.
