, Pachmarhi (at an altitude of 1,067 ft) is a saucer-shaped hill resort, which is 210 km from Bhopal
. It derived its name from Panch-Marhi, which literally means five caves. Pachmarhi is thought to have been the abode of the Pandava
brothers of the Mahabharata
(epic). The beauty of the place was discovered by Captain James Forsyth of Bengal Lancers in 1857 and he recommended its development as a sanatorium. The point first viewed by him is named Priyadarshini Point
The unique features are rocks and ravines, which was once the shelter place of hunters and passers by of the late Stone Age. Among the principal caves and ravines are Jata Shankar and Handi Khoh.
