Barwani District

Barwani District is located on the southern side of Madhya Pradesh. It was formerly a princely state ruled by the Rana dynasty. This dynasty dates back to the 13th century. This small state was spared by the British, Mughals and Marathas because of its rocky terrain and less productive soil.

Barwani is surrounded by Satpuda (in the south) and Vindhya (in the north) forest ranges. It has an area of 5,430 sq km. The population is over 1 million.

Barwani District is known for its old monuments. Bawangaja, also known as Chool Giri, is an important Jain pilgrimage center. It is 6 km from the district headquarters Barwani. There are eleven 15th century temples on the hill. The world's tallest statue of Lord Adinath, a Jain saint, is here.

Beejasan is an important place, 20 km from Sendhawa towards Maharashtra. It is famous for the temple of Goddess Beejasani (Durga). Sendhawa is a large commercial center famous for cotton ginning factories.
