Barasingha

Swamp Deer

The coat of Barasingha is generally orange to brown color, with males being slightly darker than females. The underparts, including the underside of the tail, are whitish.

The antlers of the Barasingha are usually polished and hence lighter colored in the northern and eastern races than in the southern. There are 12 or more-pointed antlers in an adult, hence the name Barasingha (bara means twelve; singha means horns).

The stags are not territorial, and the male hierarchy and dominance of the master stag is achieved more by display than actual combat.

It can be spotted in the Dudhwa National Park, Uttar Pradesh.
