Vanivilas Reservoir built across the Vedavati River in Hiriyur Taluk has centuries old history. This is the first reservoir in the state. It serves as a main source of water for domestic and irrigation purposes for the people of Chitradurga and Hiriyur. Mysore kings gave a concrete shape to the idea of building a reservoir in 1855. Work was started in 1889 and it took 11 years to complete. The area around the reservoir is one of the scenic spots in the district, ideal for outings.
