Kariavattom is located in the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram, at a distance of 16 km. It is the headquarters of the Kerala University. The University College of Engineering, under University of Kerala, started functioning from 2000-2001 onwards at Kariavattom. The Government College at Kariavattom offers various graduate and post graduate courses. The IT Park of Thiruvananthapuram, Technopark, is located near the campus of the Kerala University. The famous Kovalam beach is just half an hour's drive from here.
The nearest airport is Trivandrum International Airport. Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station is the major railhead, but most of the trains stop at Kariavattom Railway Station also.
