Thirunavaya



Thirunavaya is situated at a distance of about 8 km south of Tirur in the Malappuram District. On the amavasi day of July, a ritual called Pitru Tharpanam is organized in which Balikarma is offered by the people, to save the souls of their departed ones from sin and damnation. The place has great historical importance as well. It was here that the great assembly of rulers called the Mamangam was held. The Emperor of Kerala was selected at this time. The Mamangam festival lasted for about 28 days.

Every year Sarvodaya Mela is conducted in this place where the Gandhians of Kerala assemble. A martial art festival of Kalaripayattu is also conducted.

Other nearby attractions of the place is Palace (Mana) of the Azhvanchery Thamprakkal, and Navamukunda Temple.
