Rasam is a spicy liquid dish prepared with lentils, used with rice or snacks like vada. It is made from tamarind juice, tur (lentils), spices, and a touch of jaggery and turmeric. Rasam comes in varieties such as ordinary rasam, seeramilagu (cumin and pepper) rasam, garlic rasam, Mysore rasam, pineapple rasam, lime rasam and vepampoo (neem flower) rasam. Rasam is also used as a digestive drink.
