Puttu

Steamed Rice with Coconut

A specialty of Kerala, Puttu is a classic breakfast of a Keralite. This food in cylindrical shape is made of rice flour and coconut. This is rice flour dough layered with grated coconut and steamed in a hollow bamboo or a ‘puttu chemb’, a steamer which is cylindrical in shape. It is usually eaten with sugar or with smashed bananas or with a spicy curry made of channa. The main side-dish served along with Puttu is Kadala Curry (Black Channa Curry). This is usually served for both breakfast and evening tea.
