Poonjar Palace

Poonjar Palace, with its extraordinary collection of antiques and exquisite furniture, draws a large number of tourists to Kottayam District, Kerala. The highlights of the palace include a palanquin, a thoni or boat carved out of a single piece of wood for Ayurvedic massages, huge chandeliers, palm leaf engravings, jewel boxes, lamps and sculptures. A unique conch preserved here is taken out once a year for rituals.

The replica of the Madurai Meenakshi Temple is a nearby attraction. The rare rock-cut Chuttuvilakku (row of lamps) of the Sastha Temple is also fascinating.

Poonjar Palace is at Poonjar, on the Pala- Erattupetta route, in Kottayam. Kottayam is major railway station nearest to Poonjar.
