Malappuram



Malappuram is the headquarters of Malappuram District and was part of the erstwhile Malabar region. Kozhikode is 35 km northeast of Malappuram.

This town has a great historical background. It was the military headquarters of the Zamorins of Kozhikode since ancient times. It was also the headquarters of European and British troops, and later on became the headquarters of Malabar Special Police. The place was also associated with Tipu Sultan. The Haig Barracks on the top of a hill, at the banks of the Kadalundi River, which was established by the British to station their forces, is now turned into the seat of district administration.

The important places of attraction of this town includes Kottakkal, Thirunavaya, Kottappadi, Thali Temple, the Jama-at-Mosque, Pazhayangadi Mosque, Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, Vallikkunnu beach, Nilambur, Mamburam and Kadambuzha. Malappuram Nercha celebrated during summer attracts scores of people.

Adjacent to the Jama-at-Mosque, the mausoleum of the Malappuram Shaheeds, whose brave exploits were immortalized in the mappila ballads is a major draw. Panakkad, 6 km from Malappuram is an important spiritual center of Muslims in Kerala. The Poonkudi Mana, 10 km from Malappuram, is famous for the traditional method of treatment of mental illness. Seminars on modern treatment and traditional styles are conducted here. Poonkudi Thalapoli is a major festival celeberated here.

Club Mahindra Lakeview, Edassery Easterned, Tea County, Siena Village, Windermere Estate and Mahendra Puri are some of the hotels here famous for their renowned services.

The nearest airport is at Kozhikode. The nearest railway station is at Tirur(28 km).
