The town has numerous churches, temples, mosques, hospitals and educational institutions. Parassala Mahadev Temple, a highly revered shrine located here, was built by Mallen Chembakaraman Delava of Venad royal family. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva.

Southern Kurisumala, a famous Christian pilgrim center, and Venkanchi Vattavilai Sri Bhadrakali Amman Temple are worth visiting. Neyyattinkara, Amaravila, Kollayil, Pazhugal and Edaikodu are the nearby towns and villages.

All buses to Nagercoil from Thiruvananthapuram pass through Parassala. Parassala Railway Station, on the Thiruvananthapuram-Kanyakumari line, is the local railhead. Trivandrum International Airport is the nearest airport.
