Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary



Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary spreads in Thodupuzha and Udumbanchola taluks of Idukki District, Kerala. Covering an area of 77 sq km, the sanctuary occupies the forest land between the Cheruthoni River and the Periyar River.

The sanctuary is home to elephants, bison, sambar deer, wild dogs, jungle cats, tiger, wild boar and various species of snakes including cobra, viper, kraits and numerous non-poisonous ones. Birds include jungle fowl, myna, laughing thrush, black bulbul, peafowl, woodpecker and kingfisher. A beautiful lake seen around the sanctuary offers boat rides. This sanctuary lies near the Idukki Arch Dam.

The sanctuary is about 40 km from Thodupuzha.
