Valapattanam River




The longest river in Kannur District of Kerala, Valapattanam River originates from Brahamagiri Ghat Reserve Forest at Kodagu District in Karnataka. In its course, it joins with the Kuppam River and finally merges with the Arabian Sea.

The length of the river is about 110 km, of which about 45 km is navigable. It has a catchment area of over 1,867 sq km. The main tributaries are Srikandapuram, Valiyapuzha, Venipuzha and Aralampuzha rivers.

Valapattanam, about 7 km from Kannur, is located on the banks of this river. The famous Shri Muthappan Temple in Parassinikadavu also lies on its banks.
