Kummattikkali

Kummattikkali, a mask dance, is popular in some of the northern districts of Kerala. The dance is performed from house to house. The performers wear wooden masks and sporting sprigs of leaves and grass. The main character in Kummattikkali is Kummatti. The other characters represent various Hindu gods and goddesses. The songs deal with devotional themes and are accompanied by a bow like instrument called Ona-villu. No formal training is required to perform Kummattikkali.
