Cherrapunji




Cherrapunji, the wettest place in the world, is 56 km southwest of Shillong in the East Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya. It is situated at an altitude of 1290 m above sea level and has an average rainfall of 10,871 mm. Cherrapunji has monsoon season throughout the year and it rains mostly at night. Cherrapunji village is now called Sohra.

Cherrapunji is renowned for its limestone caves and orange honey. Mawsmai Falls, the fourth largest waterfall in India, and the oldest Presbyterian Church in India are located here. The 4.5 km long Krem Mawmluh Cave is near Cherrapunji.

Buses and taxis ply to Cherrapunji from Shillong.
