Garudan Thookkam, literally means hanging garuda (eagle god), is a ritual mainly performed in Bhadrakali temples. It is conducted as a votive offering. In Garudan Thookam, the dancers in the costume of garuda dance to the accompaniment of percussion instruments. At the end, the dancer climbs into a cart, circumambulates the temple and donates blood. Instruments like the Chenda, Madalam, Cymbals and Horns are used. This art form is popular in Kottayam and Alappuzha districts.
