Shri Mahalakshmi Temple

Shri Mahalakshmi Temple is at Gosripuram near Mattancherry in Kochi, Ernakulam District. It is to the north-west corner of Cochin Thirumala Devaswom Temple. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. The deity is worshipped as the wife of Lord Vishnu. The temple was built by gowda Saraswat Brahmins.

The temple deity was shifted to Alappuzha in 1791 along with the idol of Lord Venkateshwara. In 1881, a golden plate with Mahalakshmi Yantra was consecrated in the temple by the eighteenth pontiff of Shri Kashi Mutt, Swami Varadendra Tirtha. When the temple celebrated its centenary, a Maha Lakshmi Kavacham made of gold was installed at the temple by Swami Sudheendra Tirtha. This nine inch tall Kavacham, weighing 20 sovereigns (160 gm) depicts the image of goddess Maha Lakshmi seated on a blossomed lotus. The people here believe that the worship of Lord Vishnu will be complete only with offerings to Lakshmi.

The temple can be approached from Ernakulam Central Bus Station as well as from Ernakulam Junction Railway Station.
