Idukki Arch Dam

World's Second And Asia's First Arch Dam


Idukki Arch Dam is situated across Periyar River, in Idukki District, Kerala. It is the world's second arch dam, and the hydro electric project was constructed with Canadian assistance.

Constructed in between two hills, Kuravan and Kurathi, Idukki Arch Dam is 550 ft high, with a base of 65 ft. The dam has a power capacity of 780 MW (mega watts). The powerhouse of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project which is at Moolamattam, is a major tourist attraction.

Two other dams, are within 30 km of Idukki Arch Dam. The water from the three dams, has created a 60 sq km wide, artificial lake. Idukki Arch Dam is also adjacent to Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary.

Idukki Arch Dam can be reached by road from Kottayam. Kottayam is 121 km from the dam. The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport.
