Karivellur Madappally Someswari Temple




Karivellur Madappally Someswari Temple is situated west of Karivellur in Kannur District. It is on the National Highway 17 from Payyanur towards Kanhangad. This shrine is managed by Padmasaliya community and the chief deity is goddess Kuthirakkaliyamma. The temple is famous for the various Theyyams, such as Moovalam Kuzhichamundi, Chooliyar Bhagavathi, Vishnumoorthy, Padaveeran, Kundor Chamundi and Gulikan.

Folklore has that once Kottila Veetil Mootha Chettiyar went to attend the Pattulstavam of Shri Kandothidam Bhagavathi Temple at Payyanur. On returning, Someswariyamma (the deity) accompanied him and was later on installed at Madappally Temple.

The main festival falls on the Malayalam month Dhanu 21st and 22nd. The events start with the Padaveeran Vellattam followed by other Thottams on the evening of 21st. The temple also conducts the pooram on the Malayalam month of Meenam when devotees throng the temple in large numbers.
