Kappad

Kappad, also known as the gateway to the Malabar coast, is a historic town located in Kozhikode District of Kerala. It is about 16 km north of Kozhikode. This place is renowned as the site where the Portuguese navigator, Vasco da Gama, landed on May 27, 1498 with 170 men in three vessels.

The main attraction is the Kappad Beach where a monument has been built in memory of the historic event. A sprawling rock that protrudes into the sea gives a mind boggling view for the tourists. Another point of interest is the 800 year old temple on a hillock, facing the deep sea. This little sea faring town is in every way a haven to the tourists.

Sri Mahaganapathy Temple is a nearby attraction. Accommodations are available at Kappad Beach Resort. Kappad can be approached by road on the way to Kannur from Kozhikode and one has to alight at Thiruvangoor. Buses are readily available from Kozhikode Bus Station towards Vadakara and Thalassery. Kozhikode Railway Station and Calicut Airport are the nearest railhead and airport respectively.
