Edakka, also spelt as Idakka, is one of the five instruments that represent the
Panchavadyam of
Kerala. It is an indispensable accompaniment for
Kathakali and
Mohiniyattam.
Edakka is an hour-glass shaped drum, and has a wooden body. A tape is attached to the middle of Edakka, and this tape produces variations in tones. It is hung over the left shoulder of the performer while performance. A stick is used to beat the right side of the drum.
Edakka takes after Damaru, which is part of folk traditions.
