Edakka

Edakka, also spelt as Idakka, is one of the five instruments that represent the Panchavadyam of Kerala. It is an indispensable accompaniment for Kathakali and Mohiniyattam.

Edakka is an hour-glass shaped drum, and has a wooden body. A tape is attached to the middle of Edakka, and this tape produces variations in tones. It is hung over the left shoulder of the performer while performance. A stick is used to beat the right side of the drum.

Edakka takes after Damaru, which is part of folk traditions.
