Munnar

Located at an altitude of 1600 m above sea level, Munnar was once the summer resort of the erstwhile British government in South India. It lies at the confluence of three mountain streams - Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. Munnar, in Idukki District, is also famous as a tea town. Sprawling tea plantations, little towns, winding lanes and holiday facilities make Munnar a unique experience to discerned explorers.

Anamudi, the highest peak in south India and an ideal spot for trekking is Munnar’s pride. Marayoor, the only place in Kerala, having natural growth of sandalwood trees is 40 km away. At about 6 km from Munnar is Pothamedu, where long walks and trekking in the mountains are possible. Among the exotic flora found in the forests and grasslands here is the Neelakurinji, a flower which bathes the hills in blue color once every twelve years. Eravikulam National Park; home to the Nilgiri Thar (Nilgiri Ibex or mountain goat), Devikulam; ideal for trout fishing, Chithirapuram; wonderful view of sleepy little cottages, old playgrounds and picturesque tea plantations, Attukal Waterfalls and Chinnakanal Waterfalls are noteworthy tourist attractions. Boating trips are also arranged in and around Munnar. Basic and excellent accommodation can be made at Mahindra Resorts, Windermere Estate, Bluemount, Sterling Resort and Royal Retreat. Best time to visit is from September to May. Nearest railway stations are at Kochi and Kottayam. Nearby airports are Cochin International Airport (130 km) and Madurai Airport (142 km).
