Salagram

Also known as Saligram and Shaligram

Salagram is a precious stone which is mainly seen black in color. These fossil stones are characterized by the presence of discus marks resembling the Sudarshana Chakra. Usually, the stone appears to be spherical or ellipsoidal in shape. As it is considered sacred, Salagram is used to make idols. The Salagram is considered as a manifestation of Lord Vishnu.

These stones are mainly found in the Gandaki River in Nepal and in some parts of the Himalayas. They usually have a hole in them and some are without that. Although black in color, they seem transparent when viewed in bright light. A reddish light will be visible inside the stone. These Salagrams are called Ratna Garbha.

Sometimes we find reddish black, blue black or yellowish salagrams, which are very rare. These are classified based on shape, size, color, openings (Dwaras), Chakras(natural carvings), lines and such particulars. The yellow variety stones are the most coveted ones as they are auspicious for prosperity and wealth.
