Kayamkulam




Kayamkulam is located 54 km south of Alappuzha on the National Highway 47. Kayamkulam kayal is a backwater destination on the waterway connecting Kollam to Alappuzha. Krishnapuram Palace, located south of the town, is a major attraction. Chettikulangara Bhagavati Temple, situated on the Kayamkulam- Mavelikara road, is a major shrine. Ochira 1 km south of Kayamkulam is a famous pilgrim center. Vithoba Temple at Kayamkulam is a shrine important to Tulu Brahmins. Kayamkulam kayal joins Arabian Sea at Ayiramthengu, which has picturesque views and a beautiful beach. National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has a power generation unit at Kayamkulam. Kayamkulam also houses a rice research station and a Central Plantation Crops Research Institute. Kerala People's Theatre Association (KPAC), one of the oldest drama troupes in Kerala, has its headquarters here. The place is well known for the exploits of the folk hero Kayamkulam Kochunni. Kayamkulam railway station is a major railhead on the Southern Railway.
