Parur Synagogue

Parur Synagogue, an erstwhile place of worship of Jews in Kerala, is an ancient structure dating back to the 17th century. It is situated in Paravur, Ernakulam. Tradition says that it was built on the ruins of an earlier structure which was as old as 1165.

The Synagogue, which was used for worship till mid l998, is noted for its rare architecture. The entrance to the Jew Street from the main road to Parur, is guarded on either sides by two ten feet tall granite pillars. In olden days, admission was restricted to Jews. There are two rooms at the pillared entrance; the Synagogue is beyond a small courtyard. The wooden doors carry exquisite carvings, a style repeated at the Mala Synagogue. The central bimah and ark are a reconstruction of the originals, which were taken to Israel in 1995. The balcony is supported on decorated and gilded beams. The steps leading up to the balcony have unusually flat supports as railings. The floor and benches, doors and windows and the roof tiles that show lack of proper maintenance, still retain their charm.

Closest airport from here is the Cochin International Airport. Aluva is the nearest railway station.
