Kaladi

A Famous Hindu Pilgrim Center

Kaladi in Ernakulam District is a famous Hindu pilgrim center on the banks of the river Periyar. Located around 40 km north-east of Kochi, this quiet town is the birthplace of the great saint philosopher Adi Shankaracharya. There are two shrines here maintained by the Sringeri Math; one is dedicated to Shankaracharya and Dakshina Murthi, while the other is dedicated to Goddess Sharada.

Brindavan is a revered spot nearby where Aryamba, Shankaracharya's mother was cremated. Crocodile Ghat is the place where the acharya took his vows of renunciation. The deity at the old Shri Krishna Temple is believed to have been installed by Shankaracharya himself. Sringeri Math, Shri Rama Krishna Advaita Ashram, Shri Adi Shankara Kirti Stambha Mandapam, and Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit are the places to visit while in Kaladi.

The nearest airport is at Kochi, and the nearest railway stations are Angamaly Railway Station (10km) and Aluva Railway Station (23 km).
