Bijapur

Bijapur, located 530 km north-west of Bangalore, is well known for its Islamic architecture. The capital of the Adil Shahi dynasty during the medieval period, Bijapur brings back memories of Arabian Nights.

Gol Gumbaz, the second largest dome in the world, is the prime attraction of Bijapur. The other places of interest are Ibrahim Roza, Malik-e-Maidan, Bara Kaman, Jama Masjid, Mehtar Mahal, Taj Bawdi, Asar Mahal and Gagan Mahal. The nearby tourist places are Aihole, Pattadakal, Kudala Sangama, Badami, and Basavana Bagewadi.

Jowar Roti and Bajra Roti with toppings of sesame seeds are types of delicious bread prepared here. It is served hot, either with 'Bhartha' or 'Badnikai Palle', a brinjal preparation. The restaurants which serve authentic ethnic food are known as 'Khaanavali.' Non-vegetarian preparations are either Mughlai or Hyderabadi.

The nearest airport is at Belgaum. The railhead is close to the Gol Gumbaz, in the city. Regular trains link Bijapur with Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hospet. Bijapur Central Bus Station has services to Aihole (129 km), Badami (132 km), Pattadakal (148 km), Belgaum (205 km), Hampi (254 km) and Bangalore (580 km).
