Formed by the River
Kaveri, Shivasamudram Waterfalls are located 20 km from
Malavalli and 44 km from
Mandya. Forested hills and lush green valleys cradle a small hamlet and two fine temples provide a serene setting. The Kaveri River plummets from a height of 75 m into a deep and rocky gorge with a deafening roar to form two picturesque falls, Barachukki and Gaganachukki. The two arms of the Cauvery unite once more at Sathegala in the north-east.
The Western branch of the river Cauvery is Gaganachukki Falls and a mile away to the east is Bharachukki Falls. The grandeur of the Gaganachukki can be best viewed from behind the tomb of the Muslim saint Peer Haibe, which shines like a jewel in the bed of green around it. The Shimsha hydroelectric station can also be seen from here.
Gaganachukki is believed to be the suicide site of Nandiraja, a 16th century king of this region. He had leapt into these waters with his wife as a penance for some ceremonial offence.
The Falls can be best viewed during monsoon, from July to mid-November.
