Bellary

Bellary Town, the administrative headquarters of Bellary District, is situated between two rocky hills, in the Southern state of Karnataka. It is a leading commercial and agricultural trade center in the district.

Though the city is of medieval origin, the area has had settlements since 3000 BC. Evidences of pre-historic settlements have been unearthed from the surrounding hills - the Fort Hill and the Face Hill. The ‘fort hill’ has a 16th century fort on it, overlooking the city, built during the Vijayanagar reign. The town later came under the rule of Bijapur, Marathas, the Nizam and Hyder. After the fall of Tipu, Bellary was surrendered to the British by the Nizam.

Major attraction here is a Durgamma temple, where the deity is represented by a heap of earth.

Bellary is well connected by rail and bus services with other parts of the state. At Belgaum is the nearest airport.
