Ruddy Mongoose

Ruddy Mongoose (Herpestes smithi) is slightly larger than the Common Mongoose. Tail is as long as the head and body, with black tip that distinguishes the animal from other mongooses.

Body length is 100 cm including tail 50 cm. It weighs about 2 kg. Head is same color as the body, with brownish muzzle. Forelimbs are dark reddish-brown and speckled, while hind limbs are bright red. The coat is dark gray, with a reddish tinge. It hunts by day as well as by night and also feeds on carrion.

The Ruddy Mongoose is mainly a forest animal in difference to the gray or small Indian mongoose. It can be seen in forested areas of central and southern India and also in Orissa and West Bengal.
