The town witnessed the historic battle between Marathas and Nizam in 1759, in which Marathas won and marched to famous historical battle of Panipat in 1761.
Udgir was named after the famous Hindu Saint Udaygiri Rishi. The place is famous for its cattle markets. The most important cattle breed Deoni hails from here.
