Sharavati River is the shortest west flowing river and one of the prominent rivers of Karnataka
. It is also known as Baraganga or Gerusoppa River. River Sharavati originates in the Western Ghats
. It flows about 95 km in the northwesterly direction before draining into the Arabian Sea
Sharavati flows over the rocky bed and through the gorges during its course. It has a number of falls of which the mighty Jog Falls, the highest waterfalls in India, is important. There is a hydroelectric project on this site, Mahatma Gandhi Hydro-Electric Station, which was commissioned in 1948.
