Kasuti Embroidery

Kasuti is an indigenous style of embroidery of Karnataka. The word ‘kasuti’ is a variation of ‘kasheeda’, which is the name of the popular embroidery style used in the state.

The design scheme used in Kasuti includes the ‘Nandi’ (the holy bull), lotus, chariots, ‘Gopuram’ (temple towers) and many other traditional artifacts. The motifs also include anklets, bells, birds, animals and flowers.

This style of embroidery uses a variety of stitches. The ‘gavanti’ stitch, which is a line-and-back stitch, is used to fill the blank portions of a design. Another stitch called ‘negi’ is used for darning. The ‘menthi’ stitch is a kind of cross-stitch.

The Kasuti is used in various fabrics and garments worn by the people of the state. It is even used in the various gift articles exchanged during festive occasions.
