Hungund

Hungund is a town located around 40 km from Bagalkot, on the National Highway. In early times it was known as Honnakunda or Honnagunda, which may have been derived from the yellow colored talc, resembling gold, on the nearby hill which overlooks the town. The inscription found here reveals that these lands were granted to Mallikarjuna by Satyavati Mahadevi, the consort of king Ayyanorva of the Ballala family. A branch of the Vijayamahanteshwara mutt is also functioning here. Nearby lies the Ilkal town which is famous for its car festival held annually in honor of Vijayamahan.
