Sundargarh District



Sundargarh District is located in the north-western part of Orissa, a region dotted with isolated peaks, inaccessible forests, and mountainous terrain. It has an area of 9,942 sq km, inhabited by more than 1.8 million people. Headquartered at Sundargarh, the district is sub-divided into three regions. The climate is characterized by extremely hot summers and cool winters. Average annual rainfall is 1,230 mm. Oriya, Bengali, Hindi, Telugu and Urdu are widely spoken.

Sundargarh occupies a prominent position in the mineral map of Orissa and is rich in iron-ore, limestone, manganese, dolomite, and fire-clay. Major industries are the Orissa Cements Ltd, M/s Hart Fertilizers Ltd, and Orissa Industries Ltd. The Sankh, Koil and Ib are the famous rivers traversing the terrain. Tourist spots worth visiting are Rourkela, Chhatri Hill, Darjeeng, Ghogar, Khandadhar, Mandira, and Miriglotah.
