Jamui District

Jamui District of Bihar occupies an area of 3,122 sq km. Hills and plains mark this region. The climate is tropical. The population is 1.4 million.

Jambhiyagram and Jambubani are the two ancient names of Jamui. The old name Jambubani has been found inscribed on a copper plate kept in Patna Museum. These two ancient names prove that Jamui District was an important religious center for Jains. The 24th Tirthankar Lord Mahavir is believed to have received divine knowledge in Jambhiyagram situated on the bank of Ujjihuvaliya River. The Gupta, the Pala and the Chandel rulers are associated with this district. Jamui was also famous in the era of the Mahabharat.

Jamui District is characterized by a rich literary lineage and a vibrant musical tradition. The famous places are Minto Tower in Giddhaur, erected in commemoration of Lord Minto (the then Viceroy and Governor General of India), the Kali Mandir at Malaypur, mandir of Lord Mahavir, an old Dharamshala, Kshatriya Kund Gram and Giddheshwar Temple, devoted to Lord Shiva.
