Sani

Sani is a scenic village situated 6 km west of Padum in Kargil District of Jammu and Kashmir. Padum is about 18 km south of Stongdey.

The healthy climate, dense woods and enchanting view of surrounding hill make it a major trekking base and a popular tourist destination in the district.

Sani is related to a saint named Naropa, who is believed to have been meditated here for some time. A veiled bronze image of Naropa situated here is a major attraction. This image is unveiled once in a year during July, and a two day festival is held on this occasion.

Sani Monastery, a castle-like gompa, and the 2nd century Kanika Stupa, which lies in the backyard of the monastery, are other interesting spots in the village.

Sani can be accessed from Padum on the Kargil-Padum road, which remains opened from around mid July to early November. Jeeps and gypsy taxis are available from Kargil to Sani.
