Sankaragaurishwara Temple is the main temple located at
Pattan in
Baramulla District. The temple is dedicated to
Lord Shiva. Built by the King Sankaravarman (AD 883-902), this temple is adjacent to the
Sugandhesa Temple, to which it has structural similarity. Some parts of this temple, which include the peristyle, the temple plinth, and a small shrine in the north-east corner, have sunk into the ground in the course of its long existence. The entrance of the temple is through the square space in the middle of the eastern path.
The left wall of the portico has a trefoiled niche which is divided into two panels. There are various images depicted in the lower and larger panels. The main ones are those of Lord Shiva. The image of Lord Ganesh is also there.
Sankaragaurishwara temple can be approached from Baramulla by road. The nearest airport is at Srinagar – the capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
