Mithila

Birth place of Sita, Mithila is an ancient kingdom which comprises the northern part of Bihar and the Tarai region of Nepal. This cultural region is enclosed within the lower ranges of the Himalayas and the Ganges. It was ruled by King Janak (the father of Sita) with Janakpur (now in Nepal) as the capital.

During Sita's marriage with Lord Ram, this region was decorated with art works including murals that depict mythological personages, deities of the Hindu pantheon and the flora and fauna of the region. Mithila art work became popular as Madhubani or Art.

Madhubani, an important town in Mithila region, lies in Bihar.
