Himalayan Brown Bear




Himalayan Brown Bear (Ursus arctors) is heavy built with brown coat that may seasonally vary from dark to light. Its white-tipped fur sometimes gives it a silvery sheen. In winter, it has a heavy under wool. Length is around 175 cm.

Sheep, goats and ponies forms diet during summer. The bear seldom climbs, and takes food from ground and digs in search of tubers and roots. Berries, wild fruit, peaches, apricots, apples, mulberries and walnuts offer variety to its diet.

Its life span is about 45 yrs and mates in May or June. It can be spotted in the Nanda Devi National Park, Uttaranchal.
