Sankoo

Sankoo is an upcoming township surrounded by numerous villages and colourful rocky mountains in Jammu and Kashmir. It is situated 40 km west of Kargil.

This bowl shaped valley, rich with poplars, willows and wild roses, is awe-inspiring. The tributaries of Suru River, the Kartse and Nakpochu open up at the either side of this picturesque landscape, from the east and west respectively.

Sankoo is a famous picnic spot outside Kargil thronged by many local picnickers. Other places worth visiting around include the shrine of Sayed Mir Hashim at the Kartse-Khar village and the 7 m tall rock statue built in the 7th century.

Accommodations are available at a Government Rest House and a tourist bungalow run by the Jammu and Kashmir Tourist Development Corporation.

Regular buses connect Sankoo with Kargil, Panikhar (38 km) and Parachik (58 km).
